Summary
On August 18, 2026, OpenAI began a global rollout of ChatGPT for Teens, a separate product experience for users aged 13 to 17 with different content rules, different default behaviors, and parental controls attached. What Happened

The teen experience is not opt-in in the ordinary sense: accounts whose stated age falls between 13 and 17, and accounts the company's age-prediction model estimates belong to someone under 18, are routed into it automatically.
The age-prediction model, which OpenAI had deployed earlier in 2026, infers age from behavioral signals rather than documents — how long an account has existed, what times of day it is used, and other usage indicators. OpenAI has not published accuracy figures for the classifier or an appeals rate for adults misrouted into the teen product.
Inside the teen experience, OpenAI applies additional restrictions on self-harm and suicide content, eating disorders, violence and dangerous activities, and sexually explicit or romantic exchanges. The product also changes non-safety defaults: it surfaces "responsible homework reminders" that push users toward a step-by-step study mode rather than producing finished answers, prompts users to take breaks, and repeats reminders that the user is talking to software rather than a person.
Parental controls run through account linking. A parent can connect their account to a teen's and set quiet hours and study hours, and can adjust which features are available. Parents cannot read their teen's conversations. OpenAI says that in a narrow set of serious safety situations it may pass information to a linked parent — an extension of the parent-notification system it had widened in July 2026 to cover additional categories of urgent risk.
The launch followed a period in which OpenAI faced lawsuits and government inquiries over its handling of minors, and landed the same week that opening statements began in a 29-state case against Meta over youth mental-health harms in California federal court. Reporting on the launch was pointed about the timing: TechCrunch's headline noted the protections arrived "years after teens started using it," and NPR's coverage quoted the observation that teenagers are effective at finding workarounds to age gates.
Why It Matters
The archival significance is the structural choice, not the feature list. Character.AI's November 2025 decision to bar under-18 users from open-ended chat removed minors from the product; OpenAI's approach keeps them inside it but in a parallel version with its own rules. Those are the two templates now available to any consumer AI company facing the same pressure, and OpenAI — with by far the largest consumer base — has picked the one that preserves the user relationship.
Age prediction is the load-bearing and least examined piece. Behavioral inference of age, applied by default and without documents, avoids the privacy costs of ID checks but substitutes a classifier whose error rate is undisclosed and whose decisions affect what content an account can access. Regulators drafting minor-protection rules have generally specified outcomes rather than mechanisms; a large deployment of inferred age gating creates a de facto standard before anyone has established what accuracy such a system needs to have.
What is not yet known is whether the segregation holds in practice. Enforcement depends on a classifier teens have an obvious incentive to defeat, and OpenAI has published no data on circumvention. Nor is it clear whether this configuration satisfies the state and federal minor-safety requirements it appears designed to anticipate — those obligations remain unsettled, and the litigation that helped produce this product is still in progress.
