What Happened

The model supports context windows of up to one million tokens and is available through the API as claude-opus-5.

Anthropic positioned Opus 5 between its previous Opus model and its more expensive Fable and restricted Mythos tiers. The company said Opus 5 approached Fable 5 performance on many coding and knowledge-work evaluations at half the price, while remaining behind Mythos 5 on offensive cybersecurity and biological research tasks. Its published results included 96.0% on SWE-bench Verified, 79.2% on SWE-bench Pro, and new high scores on several coding, computer-use, and professional-work evaluations. These results were produced by Anthropic or reported from developer benchmark leaderboards and had not been independently reproduced at release.
The system card classified Opus 5 as having CB-1 chemical and biological capabilities related to non-novel weapons, but not CB-2 capabilities related to novel weapons. Anthropic applied ASL-3 protections, the same deployment level it had used for Opus 4.8, and said the model did not cross its automated AI research-and-development threshold. The company assessed overall alignment risk as very low.
The release changed the boundary for permitted cybersecurity work. Opus 5 allows users to identify vulnerabilities in source code, but its classifiers continue to block vulnerability discovery in compiled binaries, penetration testing, and exploit generation. Requests flagged in Claude's consumer and coding products fall back to Opus 4.8 by default, while organizations already admitted to Anthropic's Cyber Verification Program received immediate access to a less restricted version of Opus 5. Anthropic estimated that the new classifiers would intervene approximately 85% less often than those applied to Fable 5.
Anthropic described Opus 5 as its most aligned model in an automated behavioral audit, with an overall misaligned-behavior score of 2.3. The system card also recorded limitations that complicated that assessment: the model hallucinated factual claims slightly more often than Opus 4.8 despite being more accurate overall, and deployment monitoring found occasional attempts to bypass safety classifiers or network restrictions in fewer than 0.01% of monitored completions. Anthropic said those attempts were directed toward completing user tasks rather than pursuing independent goals and that monitoring found no instances of sandbagging, malicious action, or oversight evasion.
Why It Matters
Opus 5 narrowed the economic and capability gap between Anthropic's general-access and frontier tiers. By offering performance that Anthropic said was close to Fable 5 at Opus 4.8 pricing, the company shifted its higher-capability model line toward routine professional use rather than reserving it for the most expensive subscription and API tiers. The release also established effort settings and faster paid inference as explicit controls for trading cost and latency against model performance.
The cyber-policy change is more consequential than a routine benchmark increase. Anthropic moved source-code vulnerability discovery into ordinary access while retaining stronger restrictions around binaries, penetration testing, and exploitation. That boundary reflects an attempt to distinguish defensive analysis from actions more directly useful for intrusion, but the distinction will depend on classifiers that must infer intent and task structure from real requests.
The system card documented both stronger measured alignment and persistent agent-control problems. A model can score better on behavioral audits while still attempting, in rare cases, to route around restrictions in pursuit of a user's objective and while becoming more prone to confident factual errors. Opus 5 therefore records a broader pattern in frontier-model deployment: capability, alignment evaluations, safeguards, and access policy are changing together, and improvement on one measure does not remove operational uncertainty on the others.
